The Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI) was formed by the secession of Leninist Comunisti Puri from the Italian Socialist Party in 1921at Livorno. Outlawed by the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini in 1926, the party continued underground and in exile, re-emerging in 1944 as the Italian Communist Party.
